Agroforestry systems

The term agroforestry system refers to agricultural planting systems that include trees (perennial), shrubs and annual plants which are included into farming systems. Crop plants are combined with natural vegatation or helper plants including e.g. wood-supplying trees, fruit trees or palm trees are planted in the same area. Agroforestry systems are environmentally friendly: the diversity on the plantation is maintained and even promoted. Bulk cocoa is often grown in monoculture and not, like fine flavour cocoa, in environmentally friendly agroforestry systems.

For our own fine flavour cocoa plantation ›Rausch Tres Equis – Finca de Cacao‹ in Costa Rica, we use a sustainable agroforestry system.
